This is the playbook we run on our own builds, written so you can run it yourself. Every step is doable in-house with a weekend and some patience. If you'd rather have it done for you, that's our SEO + AI search service, but nothing below is held back.
What is AI SEO, and how is it different from regular SEO?
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring your website so AI assistants cite it when they answer a question. Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the broader discipline of earning visibility inside AI-generated answers, on your site and off it. Both sit on top of traditional SEO: a slow, thin site won't win either game.
The practical difference is what wins. Google's classic results reward pages that rank. AI answers reward passages that can be quoted: a clean 50-word answer, a statistic with its method attached, an attributed quote, a well-labeled table. Same site, different unit of competition.
| Dimension | Traditional SEO | AI SEO (AEO/GEO) |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank in the results list | Be the quoted or recommended answer |
| Unit of content | A page targeting a keyword | A passage answering a question |
| Key signals | Links, relevance, site quality | Direct answers, structured data, third-party corroboration |
| Where it's won | Mostly on your website | Your website plus directories, reviews and round-ups |
| How you measure it | Rankings, clicks | Citations, mentions, self-reported attribution |
Do homeowners and developers actually use AI to find contractors?
Yes, and it's growing, but keep it in proportion. Google AI Overviews now sit on top of searches your customers were already running, so AI visibility and Google visibility increasingly overlap. Meanwhile ChatGPT and Perplexity handle "who should I hire" questions directly, and they name specific companies when the evidence supports it.
The research is worth knowing before you spend a dollar. A Princeton-led study on generative engine visibility found that adding quotations lifted a page's visibility in AI answers by about 28%, statistics by about 26%, and cited sources by about 25%, measured across a large benchmark of queries. Those three shapes, quotes, stats, sources, are the cheapest wins in this whole playbook.
One more finding that changes strategy: as of 2026, tracking studies report that AI engines increasingly cite directories, round-ups and forums rather than the top-ranked company homepage. Translation for a contractor: your own site is half the job. What other sites say about you is the other half.
Step 1: Make every money page answer its question in the first 200 words
Retrieval-based engines judge pages heavily on their opening content. Each service and city page should answer its core question, plainly, before the first scroll.
- Write a 40-60 word direct answer under the H1. Name your company, your trade, your service area, and what makes you different. No pronouns in the first sentence, so the paragraph survives being quoted on its own.
- Phrase section headings as questions buyers actually ask: "How much does a roof replacement cost?", "How fast can you get to an emergency call?"
- Attach the method to every number. "We complete most reroofs in 2 days" beats "fast service." A stat with its timeframe and how it was measured is what AI engines lift.
- Add a real FAQ with 40-70 word answers where the first sentence stands alone and restates the subject.
- Use attributed quotes. A named owner saying something concrete gets extracted far more than anonymous marketing copy.
Step 2: Ship the technical layer: schema, sitemap, crawler access
Structured data is how you remove ambiguity about who you are, what you do, and where you work. For a contractor that means LocalBusiness (or your trade's subtype, like RoofingContractor or HVACBusiness), Service nodes for each service, and FAQPage markup that matches your visible FAQ text exactly. Mismatched schema is worse than none.
Then check the plumbing: an XML sitemap, fast mobile load times, and a robots.txt that doesn't block AI crawlers such as GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot and Google-Extended. Many contractor sites block these by accident through a copy-pasted robots file.
Schema is table stakes, not a magic lever. Several 2026 studies found pages with complete structured data get cited more often, but a controlled Ahrefs study of 1,885 pages found no major citation lift from JSON-LD added in isolation. Ship it for disambiguation, and pair it with visible content that says the same thing.
Step 3: Add an llms.txt file, with honest expectations
An llms.txt file is a plain-text summary of your business and key pages, placed at yoursite.com/llms.txt, written for AI systems to read. It takes about an hour to write. Ours is at pixellabsstudio.com/llms.txt if you want a template.
Don't oversell this one. A 90-day study across more than 500 million AI bot visits recorded only about 408 direct llms.txt fetches, and a Semrush analysis found no statistical citation lift. It costs almost nothing, and agentic tools do read it, so ship it. Just don't let anyone sell it to you as the main lever.
Step 4: Build the entity signals AI cross-checks
When an AI assistant decides whether to recommend a business by name, it cross-references sources. If your name, location and details disagree across the web, or barely exist, the assistant hedges and names someone else. Work the list in this order:
- Google Business Profile first. It feeds Gemini, AI Overviews and Maps-grounded answers. Complete every field, pick accurate categories, and build steady review velocity: a review request after every completed job.
- One canonical business identity. Same business name, address, phone and description, character for character, everywhere it appears.
- The directories that fit your work. For home-service trades: Houzz, BBB, Angi and your local Home Builders Association or trade association directory. For commercial GCs, subs and suppliers selling B2B: business directories like Clutch and industry association listings carry more weight.
- Real reviews on third-party platforms. AI engines trust ratings they can verify off your site. Never paste fake review scores into your own markup.
Step 5: Get named in round-ups and local lists
Since AI engines lean on third-party lists for "best roofer in Austin" style questions, being in those lists matters more than outranking them. Pitch local "best of" round-ups, enter regional builder and remodeling awards, sponsor your trade association chapter, and say yes to podcast and local-media interviews. Each one creates a page where someone else vouches for you, which is exactly the shape of evidence AI assistants retrieve.
Step 6: Measure whether AI actually sends you work
- Ask every lead. Add a required "How did you hear about us?" dropdown to your contact form with "ChatGPT or AI assistant" as an option. For a lead-gen business, this self-reported field is the most reliable AI attribution that exists in 2026, because many AI referrals arrive with no referrer data.
- GA4. Google Analytics shipped a native "AI Assistant" traffic channel in May 2026. Watch it, and mark form submits and bookings as key events so it reports leads, not sessions.
- Bing Webmaster Tools. Its AI Performance report, expanded in June 2026 with citation share, is the best free AI-visibility dashboard available. Register your site.
- A monthly prompt panel. Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude the 10 questions your buyers would ask ("best remodeler in [your city]", "who builds decks near [suburb]"). Score yourself: cited, mentioned, or absent. Track the trend, not any single answer.
How long does AI SEO take to work?
Faster than classic SEO, slower than ads. Across our own builds, AI-search citations typically start appearing 6-10 weeks after launching a site with this structure in place. Entity signals, reviews, directories, round-ups, compound over months and keep paying after you stop pushing.
Typical time from launching a site with direct-answer structure, schema and clean crawler access to the first AI-search citations, observed across Pixel Studio builds.
Method: monthly prompt-panel checks across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude on client buildsEvery website we ship includes this layer as standard: schema, llms.txt, direct-answer structure, and an AI-crawler-ready robots.txt. It's part of the $1,500 Site & Spec tier, not an add-on. If you want the deeper version, ongoing entity work and measurement, that's the SEO + AI search service.
Common questions about AI SEO for contractors
Getting a construction company mentioned in ChatGPT comes down to being the best-documented answer: publish direct-answer content on your site, keep your Google Business Profile and directory listings complete and consistent, earn real third-party reviews, and get named in local round-ups. AI assistants recommend businesses they can verify across multiple sources, so corroboration matters as much as your own website.
No, you cannot pay to be recommended in AI answers, and there is no index you can submit your business to. AI models cite businesses based on what they retrieve from the open web at answer time. Anyone selling guaranteed placement "in ChatGPT" is selling something that does not exist. The honest work is earning citations through content, entity signals and reviews.
AI SEO builds on regular SEO rather than replacing it. Traditional SEO earns rankings with relevant pages, links and site quality. AI SEO adds quotable structure on top: 40-60 word direct answers, statistics with methods, attributed quotes, schema markup, and third-party corroboration like reviews and directory listings. A contractor doing classic local SEO well is already halfway there.
An llms.txt file has weak evidence behind it as of 2026: a 90-day study across 500 million AI bot visits found only about 408 direct fetches, and Semrush found no measurable citation lift. It is still worth shipping because it costs an hour, agentic tools read it, and it cleanly summarizes your business. Treat it as cheap insurance, not a strategy.
AI-search citations typically appear 6-10 weeks after launching a site with direct-answer structure, schema and open crawler access, based on what we observe across Pixel Studio builds. Entity work like reviews, directories and round-up placements compounds over several months. Check progress monthly by asking the major assistants your buyers' questions and scoring whether you are cited, mentioned or absent.
